My gutters were cleaned last fall but ice dams still formed over my Columbia Heights garage this winter -- could clogged gutters have caused that?

Possibly yes but not necessarily from clogged gutters alone. Ice dams form when heat escapes through the roof and melts snow that refreezes at the eaves. If any debris remained in the gutters after cleaning or if new debris accumulated before the first freeze, standing water can freeze and block drainage which worsens ice dam formation. However ice dams over a garage are often also related to inadequate insulation or ventilation in that section of the structure. A company knocked on my door after the last storm offering to clean my gutters for $50 -- should I be worried about that?

Yes. Storm chaser companies frequently canvass neighborhoods after major weather events offering extremely low prices for gutter cleaning and roof inspections. The $50 gets them on your roof or ladder where they may cause damage, submit an inflated insurance claim on your behalf without your full understanding, or simply do a poor job and disappear. How do I know if my gutters are pulling away from the fascia because of clog weight or because of a bigger installation problem?

Both are possible and both matter. Gutters packed with wet leaves and debris can weigh hundreds of pounds and pull hangers loose from the fascia over time. But if the fascia board itself is rotted from years of water exposure the hangers have nothing solid to grip regardless of how clean the gutters are. When we clean your gutters we also check the fascia and hanger condition and flag anything that needs attention. Catching fascia rot early is far cheaper than replacing it after it spreads to the roof deck.

My downspouts are draining but I can still see water overflowing over the front of the gutter during heavy rain -- what does that mean?

This usually means the gutters have a slope problem, are undersized for your roof area, or have a partial blockage mid-gutter that is not at the downspout. Water will always find the path of least resistance and if it is overflowing the front edge during rain that water is going straight down your foundation. It can also mean the gutter has settled and lost its proper pitch toward the downspout. How often should gutters be cleaned on a home with mature oak and maple trees in the Minneapolis metro?

Twice a year at minimum -- once in late spring after the maple seed pods drop and once in late fall after the oak leaves come down, ideally before the first hard freeze. Homes with heavy tree coverage directly over the roofline may need a third cleaning in midsummer. In the Twin Cities the timing matters more than most places because gutters that go into winter clogged almost always contribute to ice dam problems. Getting them clean before November is not optional in this climate -- it is damage prevention.
