    Signs Your Gutters Need Attention

Failing gutters can cause significant water damage if left unaddressed. Look for these common warning signs.

    Sagging & Separation

Gutters that pull away from the home or sag in the middle are no longer draining correctly. This is often caused by debris buildup, ice dams, or failing fasteners.

    Overflowing & Drainage Issues

Water pouring over the edges during rainstorms indicates clogs or improper pitch. Over time, this water can pool around your foundation and cause basement leaks.

    Storm & Downspout Damage

Hail dents, wind damage, and crushed downspouts restrict water flow and weaken the entire gutter system, leaving your home vulnerable during the next storm.

    Hidden Water Issues We Find

Failing gutters often hide deeper exterior problems. During our inspections, we frequently discover secondary damage that requires attention.

    • Fascia & Soffit Rot

Water backing up behind gutters rots the wooden boards supporting your roof edge.

    • Hidden Moisture Intrusion

Overflowing water can seep behind siding, causing unseen structural damage.

    • Foundation Drainage Problems

Poor downspout placement leads to water pooling against your foundation, risking basement leaks.

    Common Gutter Questions

Answers to help you understand your gutter repair and replacement options.

How long can I wait if my gutters are pulling away from the house?

Not long. Gutters that are pulling away from the fascia are no longer directing water away from your foundation correctly. Every rainstorm that runs behind or beside a detached gutter is depositing water against your foundation, under your siding, and into your soil around the house. In Minnesota where freeze-thaw cycles are severe, a detached gutter left through winter will almost always cause fascia rot and foundation drainage problems. Get it assessed before the next rain if possible.

My gutters overflow during heavy rain but do not look damaged. Is that normal?

No. Overflowing gutters during heavy rain usually means one of three things -- the gutters are clogged with debris, the pitch is off and water is pooling instead of flowing toward the downspout, or the gutter size is undersized for your roofline. All three are fixable. Ignoring overflow allows water to pool against your foundation repeatedly which over time leads to basement moisture issues and landscaping erosion.

Can bad gutters actually damage my roof or siding?

Yes. Gutters that are clogged, sagging, or improperly pitched cause water to back up under the roofline during heavy rain or snowmelt. This standing water rots the fascia board, can work its way under the first course of shingles, and seeps behind siding panels. What starts as a gutter problem becomes a roof problem and a siding problem quickly. CM Roofing evaluates the entire exterior water management system during every inspection.

What is the difference between seamless gutters and standard sectional gutters?

Sectional gutters come in pre-cut lengths that are joined together on site. Every joint is a potential leak point over time. Seamless gutters are fabricated on site from a single continuous piece of material cut to the exact length of your roofline with no seams except at the corners and downspouts. For Minnesota homes that deal with heavy snow loads and ice damming, seamless gutters perform significantly better because there are far fewer failure points where water and ice can cause separation or leaking.

Will gutter guards completely eliminate gutter cleaning?

No -- but they dramatically reduce how often cleaning is needed. Quality gutter guards keep out leaves, shingle granules, and large debris while allowing water to flow through freely. In Minnesota where maple seeds, pine needles, and storm debris are common, even the best gutter guards may need a quick inspection once a year. The goal is to reduce maintenance from two to four times per year down to once every year or two, not to eliminate it entirely.
